Donate Your Old Cell Phones to Cell Phones for Soldiers
I recently switched cell phone providers. The new company gave me a tiny prepaid bag to send my cell phone to a collection point but it wasn’t large enough for all of the accessories so it is still on my credenza. On a TV news program I watched a human interest story entitled “Cell Phones for Soldiers.” Started by two teenagers, Robbie and Brittany Bergquist of Lowell, Mass, the non-profit has raised over $1 million in donations and has distributed over 250,000 pre-paid calling cards to soldiers overseas. I was impressed with their results.
Cell Phones for Soldiers sends donated cell phones and accessories to Michigan-based ReCellular which pays the non-profit up to $50 for each donated cell phone (approximately 24 hours of calling time). The donations are used to purchase pre-paid calling card for soldiers overseas.
As a business person, here are a few ways you can help:
- Companies and non-profit organizations can start a collection drive (internally or externally) by visiting http://www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com.
- Individuals can donate used cell phone and accessories to collection points across the U.S. or mail your cell phone using a prepaid mailing label from their web site.
Military units can request calling cards by visiting the website and clicking on Request Cards.
I hope you will consider recycling your cell phones and accessories through this program. Help soldiers call home and keep in touch with their families.
