Are You Your Biggest Security Risk?
Online security begins with a strong password and safe practices. You may be making it easy for devious people to breech your accounts, especially if you are using easy to remember words or the same password across all of your accounts?Your security practices may also be a problem. Are you giving out your password to others over the phone, sending both a username and password via email, writing your password down and keeping it near your PC, or even worse — never changing your password.
Resist the urge to use the same password across all of your accounts. If someone cracks that password they can potentially access multiple accounts.
Use these guidelines for creating passwords that are hard to crack.
- Use a different password for each account.
- Never use a word that is in the dictionary, a year, a pet name, telephone number, account number, social security number or license plate as your password. Not even if you enter it backwards. It’s too easy for someone to run this type of information through an algorithm and come up with possible passwords.
- Use at least 8 characters.
- Create as many variations as possible. The more combinations you use the harder your password is to figure out. Use a combination of letters, numbers and symbols and combine uppercase and lowercase characters.
- Most importantly change your password frequently.
