Should I submit my web site to Google?

Published by Ruth under Search Engine Optimization

There is no need to submit your web site to Google. Google sends out spiders on a regular basis that will index your site. If you would like to verify that your site appears in Google, perform a search for your web site’s URL (web site address). Type the following into the search box. Replace the word domain for your domain name: site:www.domain.com - for example, site:www.ebizability.com.

Donate Your Old Cell Phones to Cell Phones for Soldiers

Published by Ruth under Help Others

I recently switched cell phone providers. The new company gave me a tiny prepaid bag to send my cell phone to a collection point but it wasn’t large enough for all of the accessories so it is still on my credenza. On a TV news program I watched a human interest story entitled “Cell Phones for Soldiers.” Started by two teenagers, Robbie and Brittany Bergquist of Lowell, Mass, the non-profit has raised over $1 million in donations and has distributed over 250,000 pre-paid calling cards to soldiers overseas. I was impressed with their results. Continue Reading »

Do you want to see computer screen text clearer and reduce the strain on your eyes? If the letters on your screen seem faint and jagged you may be able to improve the clarity of the text by turning on the ClearType setting in Windows XP. The ClearType setting smooths out your fonts and makes them seem a bit thicker (not bolder).

End of the Year Web Site Review

Published by Ruth under Web Design

The end of the year is traditionally a time for review of the past year and planning for the upcoming year. Don’t forget to include your website in this annual business tradition. Create a daily reminder by setting your website as your home page in your browser. In Internet Explorer, select Tools / Internet Options from the menu bar. On the General tab there is a section for Home page. Type the full address for your homepage into the address box, e.g., http://www.bizgeorgia.com (insert your domain).

Now everytime you start your computer, you will be reminded that your website needs to be reviewed and included in your action items for the end of the year. Instead of reviewing the entire website in one session, review one page each day and you should finish the task before long.

Truthiness is a Real Word

Published by Ruth under Web Copy

I ran across the word Truthiness on a website and questioned whether it was a real word. I googled it rather than browse my dictionary. Wikipedia has an entry for “truthiness” and explains its origin. In fact, it was named word of the year for 2005 by the American Dialect Society and for 2006 by Merriam-Webster.  Find out more at Wikipedia.

Phishing Has Now Morphed into Vishing

Published by Ruth under Online Life

Your personal information is now under attack by a different form of phishing — vishing.

Phishing as you may remember, is when someone sends you a sneaky email pretending to be from someone you trust (a bank, Amazon, eBay, etc) and asks you to click on a link to verify account information.  When you click on the link you are redirected to another website that collects your personal access information and steals your information.

Vishing uses a telephone and Voice over IP (VoIP).  Basically, someone calls you and states that you need to take an action.  They give you a telephone number to call.  When you call the number they ask you to enter your account number and password into the telephone system and capture your account info.  Unfortunately, the telephone number is a VoIP line that cannot be traced.
In Atlanta, several scams have revolved around utility bills.  If you get one of these calls get as much information as you can from the person on the phone.  Then call the fraud number at the company they say they represent (not the number given to you by the solicitation).  Its safer to call the company on a public number to find out if what you were told is true rather than give your information away to a vishing scam.
